Family of Daniel^6 Van Vickle

Note: It is Evert's family (Daniel^ 6's father) where the surname change to Van Vickle appears to have happened. Did Evert^5 deliberately change his surname? Here are Harry Macy's comments (letter to me dated 28 July 2000)." You mentioned that Evert^5 changed his name to Van Vickle, but remember that as long as they spoke Dutch they all pronounced the name that way (my note: i.e. "fahn vickle"). In the NY/NJ area they or the clerks that kept records knew the "W" spelling was correct even if it was pronounced "V"--but out in Virginia and Ohio apparently that wasn't understood. Clerks or schoolteachers may have told Evert or his children that Van Vickle was the "right" way to spell the name. I'm assuming that Evert himself was not very literate, and isolated from the rest of the family, he may have had no idea that he was using the "wrong" spelling. One sees this sort of thing a lot among the Dutch that migrated into non-Dutch areas."

Background information:

Daniel^6 Van Vickle (Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was b. 1775, prob. NY, d. 1834 at age 60--Pickaway Co., Ohio. He removed to Walnut Twp, Ohio. Married 27 July 1812 Pickaway Co., Ohio to Christina Hott.

Children: Mary^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1812, Pickaway Co., Ohio. She married Nathan Abbott, (b. abt 1807, Del) abt 1839 and they had a son, Harrison Abbott, b. abt 1840; Jane^7 Van Vickle, b. 1810/15, Pickaway Co., Ohio. (There are discrepancies to be cleared up with this daughter. One source indicates that this daughter was named Martha and that she died unmarried abt age 21. Another source lists her as Jane, who married Zachariah Reed on 4 January 1826. It may be that her name was Martha Jane Van Vickle and that these two sources are in some ways both correct.);  Daniel^7 Van Vickle, b. 25 February 1817, Pickaway Co., Ohio. He d. 29 September 1884, bur. Reber Hill Cemetery, Walnut Twp, Ohio. He married three times and appeared to have children by his first and third marriages; Elizabeth^7 (Rachel?) Van Vickle, b. Oct 1829, Pickaway County, OH (There has been some confusion as to whether this Elizabeth married John Odell; however, it was Elizabeth, d/o of Evert^6 Van Vickle who did so.)

Daniel^6 Van Vickle is listed as a private in the muster roll of Capt. Hugh Craighton's Company of Ohio soldiers in the War of 1812.

Pickaway County, Ohio; History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio lists Daniel Vansickle was a miller by occupation and came from Berks County, PA in 1800. He worked in Stephen Short's Mill, near Ashville, and was married there in 1811. His wife was from Loudoun county, VA. He worked in Short's mill five or six years and for a short time after the mill was sold. Then he worked in Foresman's mill, Big Walnut, and died in the year 1834, aged 60. Four children were born to him: Mary Ann Vansickle who married Nathan Abbott; Martha Vansickle, who died when about 21 and never married; Elizabeth Vansickle, who lived with her sister, Mrs. Abbott; and Daniel, who owns a farm of sixty acres, on section one. Mr. Vansickle, Sr., was twice in the War of 1812. --from Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2000. (William Hysom, whose great grandfather was George W. Van Vickle contends in his research on the Van Vickle family that this Daniel Vansickle may actually be the Daniel Van Vickle who married Christina Hott. --via 12 Sep 2002 email from Bill Hysom) (If one checks the census data in the source section below, one can clearly see that Mary A. [Van Vickle] Abbott, and Elizabeth Van Vickle are clearly Van Vickles and not Van Sickles. My best guess at this time is that Mary A., Martha, Elizabeth, and Daniel "VanSickle" are one in the same with Mary A., Jane, Daniel and Elizabeth "VanVickle." A check of the Pickaway County (or Ohio in general, for that matter) census tables does not reveal a Daniel Van Sickle.

Richard Thrashler and Mary A. Van Vickle? It has previously been indicated that Mary A. Van Vickle, d/o Daniel^6 Van Vickle married a Richard Thrashler. However, the following census data indicates that this Mary would have been to old (i.e. b. abt 1798) to be Daniel's daughter, Mary A. If she is indeed a VanVickle, she is someone else's daughter. 1840 US Census for Muhlenburg, Pickaway, OH lists Richard Thrasher in a household with one male 10 to 15, one male 15 to 20, one male 30 to 40, one female, 5 to 10 and one female 40 to 50 1850 US Census for Monroe, Pickaway, Ohio lists Richard Thrasher, 53, farmer, b. VA with Mary, 52, b. VA and son Hugh, 18, b. OH, and dau., Mahala, 15, b. OH

1820 US Census for Walnut, Pickaway, Ohio lists Daniel Vanvickel in a household of 1 male < 10, 1 male over 45, 2 females < 10, and 1 female over 45. This is consistent with Mary A. and [Martha?] Jane being b. 1810/5 and Daniel being b. 1817. (Right next door is the household of Henry Hott--relative of Christina [Hott] VanVickel?)

1830 US Census for Walnut, Pickaway, Ohio lists Daniel Vanvickle, age 50 to 60, with a woman, age 40 to 50, one male, age 10 to 15, one female under age 5, two females ages 15 to 20 and one female age 20 to 30. This lines up well for Daniel, wife Christina, son, Daniel and daughters, Mary and Jane and perhaps Elizabeth, who would have been b. abt 1830. There is one additional female who may be a domestic or perhaps a relative (i.e. female age 20 to 30)

1840 US Census for Harrison, Pickaway, OH lists Daniel Vanvigel in a household with 1 male < 5 (William), 1 male 20 to 30 (Daniel, Jr.) and 1 female, 20-30 (E. [Clark] VanVickel)

These five US Census entries (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900) would appear to identify the Mary A. Van Vickle above as well as suggest that she may have had a younger sister, Rachel Elizabeth or Elizabeth Rachel, b. abt 1829.

1850 US Census for Harrison, Pickaway, OH lists Nathan Abbott, 43, farmer, b. Del, with wife, Mary A. Abbott, 38, b. VA, Harrison Abbott, 10, b. OH, Elizabeth Van Vickle, 20, b. OH, George Van Vickle, 3, b. OH, and Martha C. Van Vickle, 9 months, b. OH. (George and Martha appear to be the children of Daniel^7 and Elizabeth [Clark] Van Vickle. Elizabeth Clark died in 1849, so Elizabeth Van Vickle (Daniel's sister) appears to be looking after the children.) 

1860 US Census for Muhlenberg, Pickaway, OH lists Nathan Abbott, 52, farmer, b. DE, with Mary A., 50, b. VA, Harrison, 20, farmer, b. OH, Unicy Abbott [mother?], b. DE, Elisabeth Van Vickle, 30, b. OH, and Martha, 10, b. OH (George is now living with his father, Daniel^7 as indicated by the 1860 US Census for Harrison Twp, OH)

1870 US Census for Pleasant, Franklin, OH lists Nathan Abbott, 63, farmer, b. DE, with wife, Mary A. [Van Vickle] Abbott, keep house, b. VA, and Rachel Van Vickle, 40, b. OH, lives with her sister. Although the entry says "Rachel" it would appear that this is the "E. Van Vickle" of the 1880 US Census.

1880 US Census for Pleasant, Franklin, OH lists E. Van Vickle, 52, female, single, as servant and keeping house, b. OH with both parents b. VA. living in the household of Nathan Abbott, 78, farmer, b. Delaware with both parents b. Delaware, and wife Mary A. Abbott, 70, keeping house, b. VA with both parents b. VA.

1900 US Census for Harlem, Delaware, OH lists Elizabeth Van Vickle, 70, b. Oct 1829, b. OH (VA, VA), servant living in household of Ed and Annie Hennis. (Elizabeth is their great aunt.)
